Fitzhugh Dye was born on January 3rd, 1911 to Thomas Burton Dye and Ethel Dye. He was the 6th of seven children, and the third boy born to the couple. Fitzhugh had a normal childhood for kids at the time. He grew up in Olive Branch, Mississippi, went to school, learned to read and write, and spent most of his free time helping out on the family farm. Fitzhugh made it all the way to his junior year of high school before dropping out to work full time on the farm.
In 1933, when Fitzhugh was 22, his father died. Fitzhugh's older brother Chester took over the farm with his wife. Fitzhugh continued to live with them as a worker on the farm. He never married or had children, and his life continued peacefully until the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Fitzhugh was drafted at the age of 30, and he officially enlisted in the army on September 23rd, 1942.
